A volunteer from the Second Chance Animal Rescue Society in Greece known only as E caught sight of a large, mixed-breed dog resting at a gas station situated about 65 kilometers from the capital, Athens. The pooch was homeless, judging from the air of neglect around him.
He was underweight, and his fur was rather scraggly and dirty. His sorrowful eyes broke E’s heart, and she promised to go back for him soon.
E made good on her promise and returned to the fuel station after two days, accompanied by her friend Valia Orfanidou. The rescuer proceeded to gain the gentle giant’s trust as Valia filmed the encounter.
Although the pooch was hungry, he didn’t want to come too near. Perhaps he had a bad experience with humans before, or maybe he was just not used to interacting with people. Either way, E had to be patient.
First, she tossed him some treats from a distance. Once the dog was relaxed, E sat next to him at the curb, eating a snack and breaking off a few pieces for him now and then.
The volunteer took her time building rapport with the canine, simply sitting quietly and not making eye contact to let him know she wasn’t a threat. Later, she asked Valia to leave the two of them alone for a bit.
When Valia returned after an hour, E had already managed to place the leash around the dog’s neck. It was time to bring him to a vet clinic.
The women named him Arnie. Fortunately, his blood work indicated that he wasn’t suffering from any illnesses. The canine’s only issue was a skin condition that caused rashes and itching, but this was quickly resolved.
Arnie was obedient and cooperative, but he was still reticent during his first few weeks at E’s home. The rescuer gently coaxed him out of his shell and showed him that it’s okay to trust people.
Eventually, Arnie started wagging his tail again. Surprisingly, he turned out to be an outgoing pooch who loved to be the center of attention. He liked coming with E to see her friends, and he makes sure he gets pats and cuddles from everyone.
About a month later, a woman named Marilli became Arnie’s forever mom. The dog’s new home is perfect for his friendly personality — he has one canine and five feline siblings! Watch Arnie getting a lot of love in the video below:
